prom '92

last night i went to a party in los angeles that carried the theme "prom '92: electric boogaloo". of course, brendan only told me it was a prom party and not from 1992 so i had to borrow some things from steve to look okay. my outfit turned out to be this

it's hard to tell in this photo, but the suit is this awesome shiny gray astronaut type suit that can probably pass for any time period that you want.

so we went to the party and right when we got there, there was a big fireworks display nearby. it was because the dodgers had won a home game but there were lots of "man you guys really go all out" and "how'd they know about the prom party?" jokes. regardless, it was a good kickoff to the party.

what struck me first was that like a "fake moustache" party i went to last year, i was amazed that everyone stuck to the theme. i'm used to party themes being abruptly ignored by everyone worried about looking uncool by participating. this instance however, everybody was dressed up in dresses, suits and the occasional pair of 3-d glasses. did anyone really wear those in 1992? or ever?

the party itself was pretty fun. the dj strayed from '92 here and there and went as far as '96, but nobody seemed to care. he did play the essentials like kris kross, house of pain, ice cube and dr. dre. from what i could tell the biggest hit on the dancefloor was "buddy holly" where everybody jumped around. all in all, we were there for a few hours. there was dancing, drinking, got to meet some new people and rediscovered some songs from deep in my past that i downloaded as soon as i got home (namely "return of the mack" by mark morrison. amazing). and i also got this amazing picture of brendan and steve out of it too.

although to be fair, i was not immune to embarrassment. somehow, by the end of the night, i thought it was a good idea to allow this picture to be taken.

check out the best song from 1992, which was unbelievably not played the whole time we were there.

I'm coming. And when I get there, I'm expecting to attend parties as exciting as this on a regular basis.
