book review - the curious case of benjamin button

so i haven't read anything in a long time. but i'm fresh off this job and i have some free time on my hands so i decided to get back into the reading game. with baby steps mind you, so i started with a short story. i decided on one by f. scott fitzgerald since i had just read some news about it being turned into a movie and brendan has the whole collection in his library.

the story is "the curious case of benjamin button" and tells of a man who is born at age 70 and ages in reverse throughout his life. it was originally written in 1922 and was inspired by a mark twain quote which basically said "it's a pity that the best part of life came at the beginning and the worst part at the end".

the story floats by quickly with little emphasis put on any part of benjamin's life. each stage is touched upon as significantly as the next, which is to say, not very significantly at all. however, by the end of the fifteen or so pages i found myself moved by the ideas. i began thinking about my own ageing process and how depressingly true twain's quote can be. the best days of our lives may very well be behind us. i was moved by the relationship benjamin has with his father. it may not have been anything i actually read in the story, but something i added between the scenes with my own imagination, i'm not sure, but it made me want to call and talk to my dad. a powerful response if you ask me.

for an idea so simple and so simply executed, i feel like i'll be thinking about it and it's themes for days.
