what are you looking at?
last night karrie, brendan, josh and i went to a group art show in los angeles called "what are you looking at?" it was in a rundown part of downtown and was billed as having free drinks, music and celebrity attendants. brendan kept saying that last time they did it, spike jonze and the yeah yeah yeah's came. i was skeptical.
we met up at a coffee shop first to hear our friend dal conner play some accoustic original songs and it was pretty good. but then we headed to the art. so, there were about 90 things on display, most were for sale, none for less than $120. so, clearly i was not going to be leaving with any art. which turned out okay because i didn't like much of it. to put it straight out there, i'm no art critic. i don't know a lot about art, so any opinions i make about it is usually based on whether it viscerally effects me or not. i tried to find some pictures on the internet of some of the stuff that was there but no luck (i only tried for a few minutes, it may still be out there). anyway, the following artists were featured.
blake britton
jonny fenix
casey mckee
tyler mei
aric mei
colin mitchell
nicolas pectol
ryan smith
it ranged from photography to paintings to video art and it was a cool little venue/experience. as for the three promises, there were free drinks. wine was free but beer and other liquor cost money, as brendan found out the hard way. i enjoyed my free wine though. there was music as well. two bands that usually don't have anything to do with each other played as one and i actually liked it a lot. it was music that fits well into the background of an art exhibit though if that gives you any indication of what it was like. the two bands are pure horsehair and sweet bleeders. both of their official sites offer some free downloads so you can check out some of their music below.
pure horsehair - greener pastures
sweet bleeders - waiting to explode
and finally spike jonze and the yeah yeah yeahs failed to show (although to be fair we were only there for an hour). jesse bradford did make an appearance though.
for those unfamiliar, jesse bradford was in "bring it on", "swimf@n", and brendan says he gives one of the best child performances of all time in soderbergh's "king of the hill". i haven't seen him in much, but what i have i think he is really good and not as famous as he should be. anyway, i gave him the tap and told him i was fan as we were leaving.
we then went on to another party in santa monica that involved lots of drinking, a bonfire, stoners playing bad music on guitar, foosball and a 2am trip to swingers before the night was finally over.

The guy who directed "the Rest of your Life," the feature in Charlotte that Jones shot & I cut, was originally slated to be a starring vehicle for Jesse Bradford. Unfortunately, upon receiving and reading the script Mr. ClockStoppers said that he "gets the same script ten times a day." Ouch. Either way I liked him in that movie about him and his golden retriever lost in the pacific northwest (or was it the atlantic northeast?)
